Przemysław Piwowarczyk is a historian of antiquity. He earned his MA at the University of Silesia in Katowice (2009). He prepared his PhD thesis at the same University under the co-supervision of late Wincenty Myszor (University of Silesia) and Ewa Wipszycka-Bravo (University of Warsaw) on the topic Organization of the Gnostic Groups in the 2nd–4th centuries CE, and defended it in 2013. Since 2014 he works as an assistant professor (adiunkt) in the Department of Classical Philology at the University of Silesia.
His research is focused on the social aspects of widely understood Christian communities in Roman and Byzantine Egypt (including Gnostics and Manichaeans). Much of his work deals with the Coptic literary and documentary material.
In the project Monks and Monastic Communities in Eastern Mediterranean (4th–8th c.) he scrutinizes the private letters produced mainly in the Western Thebes in 6th–8th centuries CE in search of religious ideas and imaginary. His aim is to reconstruct, how the theological concepts functioned in the daily communication in the monastic milieu. The epistolary production of the Palestinian monks serves him as a material for comparative approaches.
